Call - (verb)
Definition
This verb is often used to discuss industrial action. We say trade unions ‘call for’ industrial action. If the members support this action in a ballot, the union can ‘call a strike’. When the trade union decides to end (or not start) the strike, we say they ‘call off’ the industrial action.

Example of Use: After negotiations broke down, the union called for industrial action. After its members gave their backing, the union called a strike. Management then came back to the negotiating table and as a result the union called off the action.
